POLICE stations are to open in mosques, supermarkets and football stadiums under drastic cuts to the thin blue line.
Members of the public reporting a crime will have to go to “access points” instead of their local nick.
Community centres, churches, cafés and libraries will also be used if a trial in London is successful.
But MPs and campaigners fear crime across the country will rise if police stations are closed. There are also concerns that the reporting of crimes will tumble if victims shun the system.
The Metropolitan Police have already earmarked a Costa coffee shop in Highgate, north London, and Tottenham Hotspur’s White Hart Lane ground.
But Labour MP David Lammy, said: “I know we need to find efficiency, but the suggestion that we can use cafés or supermarkets cannot be taken seriously.”
And London Assembly member Andrew Dinsmore said opening desks in places of worship was “culturally insensitive”.
