MOHAMMED HANIF insists he should never have been charged after pushing a racist teenager who then fell and hit his head off a shelf.
A SHOP worker who floored a racist teenager who hurled threats at him walked free from court yesterday.
And Mohammed Hanif, 45, said he should never have been charged.
He lashed out at 17-year-old Thomas O’Dwyer, who had called him a “black b******” and challenged staff and customers to fight.
Mohammed lost his job over the confrontation.
He said: “I am so glad this is all over now.
“The last year has been a complete nightmare and hopefully now I can get back to a normal life.
“A lot of people have been scared to employ me with the court case hanging over me.
“I’ve just started a retail business and if I had been given a harsher sentence that could have been ruined.
“It was a joke that I ended up in court in the first place considering what really happened that day.”
The whole incident was caught by the CCTV cameras in the shop in Wishaw, Lanarkshire.
Drunken O’Dwyer made references to the National Front and threatened Mohammed, of Holytown, Lanarkshire, while scared shoppers called police.
After 10 minutes pleading with O’Dwyer to leave the premises, Mohammed pushed him. O’Dwyer fell and hit his head off a shelf.
When officers arrived Mohammed was arrested and spent two days in custody.
O’Dwyer suffered a depressed skull fracture and spent several days in the head injuries unit at Glasgow’s Southern General.
Dad-of-three Mohammed admitted assault at Hamilton Sheriff Court following the incident in May last year.
He was facing a potential jail term but yesterday he was admonished after the court heard he had been of good behaviour for the last six months.
Sheriff Shiona Waldron had earlier told Mohammed that there was “very considerable provocation” in the case.
O’Dwyer was sentenced to 80 hours’ community service for his part in the incident.
In March, Mohammed tackled two knife raiders on his first day in a new job at a shop in Airdrie.
