Appeasing the enemy never works. So it’s no surprise that the thugs and litigation jihadists from hate group CAIR (Council on Anti-American Islamic Relations) still aren’t satisfied with the changes made by the MTA for ads that might offend Muslim jihadists. Now, they are pushing for more, no doubt demanding the MTA add sharia-compliant rules on blasphemy to its policy.
THIS IS THE NEW MTA POLICY ON ADVERTISEMENTS:
CAIR NY One month ago our office received a phone call from a Muslim mother of three in the Bronx who expressed her concern with riding New York trains featuring hate ads that read “19,250 deadly ISLAMIC attacks since 9/11. Its not Islamophobia, its Islamorealism.” CAIR-NY was surprised by the racism posted in an MTA ad which associated Islam with terror, and we were surprised by the fact that many Muslim institutions and organizations had no idea that the ads ran for the entire month of August, and were unable to do anything about it.
To make sure hate groups would stop getting away with promoting anti-Muslim bigotry in NY, we organized a large coalition of community groups to join us in condemning and marginalizing this anti-Muslim campaign. We reached out to Mayor Bloomberg’s office and the office of MTA Executive Joseph Lhota, we created materials and programs to educate the public and counter the message of the ads, and we contacted media to begin a campaign to expose the designated hate group behind the ads in the future.
When a second round of hate ads began running last week, CAIR-NY was the first organization that asked commuters to share the location of the hate ads, and we sent volunteers to the sites immediately to leaflet and speak to commuters. We also facilitated the media coverage that forced the nation to confront anti-Muslim bigotry instead of ignore it as it did just one month earlier. Over one hundred articles were featured in media outlets describing the ads as “inflammatory” and “racist.”
We were able to use this media attention to pressure the MTA to act and in last week’s board meeting they decided to amend their policies to include disclaimers on “deplorable” ads in the future– a glaring contrast to the silence we saw with MTA hate ads just one month ago.
However, now is not the time to relax. Despite the MTA’s decision to amend its policies, we believe they and our elected officials can do more. We should not settle for anything less than a public statement against anti-Muslim hate posted in our city and a clarification of the MTA policy which defines how ads are approved or rejected. Join CAIR-NY’s actions to ensure our community can marginalize bigotry through proactive organizing and coalition building.
