Police are appealing for witnesses after an 80-year-old man was violently
attacked in his car in Old Trafford.
The incident happened on Sunday 29
July 2012 shortly before 10.55am, when the man was in his car, a blue Vauxhall
Astra, at the junction of Kings Road and Upper Chorlton Road.
A man
approached the car, opened the door and then began to kick and punch the elderly
man in his face and head as he sat inside his vehicle.
The man then
walked off along Kings Road, away from Upper Chorlton Road.
The victim
suffered facial injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.
The offender is described as mixed
race, Afro-Caribbean, with short black hair. He is believed to be in his late
20s, of medium to heavy build, and was wearing a brown or grey
hoody.
Detective Inspector Debbie Oakes from Stretford CID said, "I would
appeal to anyone who may have seen this incident to come forward and speak to
the police. This was a vicious and completely unprovoked attack on an elderly
man who needed hospital treatment for his injuries.
"We have released
CCTV footage of a man we would like to speak to in connection with this attack
and I would encourage anyone who thinks they may recognise this person to
contact officers at Stretford CID.
"On the day this attack happened,
Egypt were playing New Zealand in the Olympics at Old Trafford football ground,
which may help to jog peoples memories and help them to remember what they were
doing. We do not believe the attack was in any way related to the
football.
"We are determined to identify the individual responsible and
ensure he is made to pay for his what he has done."
Anyone with
information should call Stretford CID on 0161 856 7651 or call the independent
charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
